Riding a gentle trail wise horse, that is yours for the trip, with
western-style food and comfortable camps, is one of the finest ways to know the back country. Nobody is a dude on our trips so you
need not hesitate to join us. We think this is a mighty pleasant way of mountain travel. We have a children's age limit of twelve years or older, but we do make
exceptions to that when one family contracts for the whole trip.
Please contact us regarding horseback trip
availability.
Qualifications & General
Information
You don't have to be the world's best
hiker or rider to join our trips.
We often have beginners. Reasonably good health and desire to be in the
mountains are the main qualifications. We have an upper age limit, but
expect you to know what you should undertake. Many of the camps and trails
are at high altitudes, so if you have any doubts about your ability to
exertion under these conditions, please have a check-up. Conditioning helps
of course, and if your habit is regular exercise you will enjoy things
more.
We try to start trips with fairly easy days and allow time to be unhurried
and relaxed. Singles, couples and families are welcome. We ask that children
under age sixteen be with a responsible adult. On horseback trips we have
a twelve-year age limit, but it can be waived under certain circumstances.
Many folks like the idea of a pack
trip but would like to change the itinerary a bit or just bring family
and friends. We are happy to accommodate private groups (with a minimum
of twelve hikers or six riders). All it takes is a bit of notice
and we can usually schedule a trip. It works best to start planning
in the winter, but we occasionally have a trip that doesn't get necessary
sign-up, in which case we could fit you into that slot.
Unless specifically stated otherwise
incase of late snow melt, some trips may be rerouted. Stehekin is
not connected with any highway or road to the "outside",
so on our Mountain Trips, to make it easier and to save time, we
arrange and furnish transportation from Chelan (the nearest town)
and back to Chelan, unless we specifically state otherwise. We'll
send you full instructions on when and where to meet when you sign
up. We'll send you a list of what to bring and what we furnish with
your inquiry.

NORWEGIAN
FJORD HORSES
|
| Fjords (pronounced "Fee-ords")
are characterized by their buckskin coloring, with a black dorsal stripe
running down their backs through mane and tail. The mane and tail are
bordered by white hair with inner black hair. Their build is compact,
stocky, and extremely strong for their size; their heights range between
13 and 15 hands.
Fjords are agile and sure-footed in difficult
terrain, being inherently a mountain horse from the Fjords of Norway.
These horses are well-suited to any situation, be it riding, pack,
draft, or driving. They have a lot of heart, are easy to handle,
are not easily spooked, and they try to cooperate with their handlers.
They learn fast, are very friendly and love attention. Their gentle
nature makes them a great family horse, as well as a pleasure for
the single owner that expects a lot of performance. We've owned,
used and raised fjords for 20 years, and wouldn't trade them for
any other horse.
Please write to us for a list of horses for sale,
or for information. Be sure to see them by the bakery, or at Stehekin
Valley Ranch, while you are in Stehekin.
